TRAFFIC RULES IN CALIFORNIA

Don’t let a traffic ticket spoil your NASCAR weekend in San Diego. Before hitting the road, take a moment to familiarise yourself with some key California traffic laws. While most rules are similar to those across the U.S., there are a few California-specific details worth knowing.

Driving side

In California, as in the rest of the United States, vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Speed limits

Speed limits depend on the type of road and area you’re in:

  • Residential areas: 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h)
  • Highways: 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h)
  • Interstates: Up to 70 mph (113 km/h)

Always obey posted speed signs and reduce speed in poor weather, heavy traffic, or construction zones. California police actively enforce speed laws, especially near major cities and coastal routes.

Traffic signals and signs

You must obey all traffic lights and stop signs.

  • Right turns on red are allowed after a full stop, unless a sign says otherwise.
  • Always yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic when turning.
  • At flashing red lights, treat the intersection as a stop sign.

Driving under the influence (DUI)

California has strict DUI laws.

  • The legal blood alcohol limit (BAC) is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and over.
  • For drivers under 21, any detectable alcohol can lead to suspension or fines. Police frequently conduct DUI checkpoints, especially during major events and weekends — it’s safest to plan for a designated driver or rideshare.

Seat belt requirements

Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants, front and back. Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under 16 are buckled up. Failure to comply can result in fines for both the driver and passengers.

Right of way

California law requires drivers to yield to:

  • Pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks
  • Vehicles already stopped or were moving through an intersection. At four-way stops, the first driver to arrive has priority. If two arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right-hand side goes first-

If you’re pulled over by the Police

If law enforcement signals for you to stop, follow these steps for a safe and calm interaction:

  1. Pull over safely — signal and move to the right shoulder or a safe, well-lit area.
  2. Stay in your vehicle — keep your seat belt on, hands visible on the steering wheel, and avoid sudden movements.
  3. Wait for instructions — only reach for your license, registration, and proof of insurance when asked.
  4. Be polite and cooperative — stay calm, answer respectfully, and don’t argue.
  5. If you receive a ticket, signing it only confirms receipt — it’s not an admission of guilt. You can contest it later if desired.
  6. Know your rights — you have the right to remain silent and may ask if you’re free to leave. Always comply with lawful directions.
  7. Document the stop if needed — note the officer’s name, badge number, and patrol car details if you believe your rights were violated. You can later file a complaint or seek legal advice.
